Adam Smith
Scottish philosopher and economist whose The Wealth of Nations founded modern economics by analyzing the division of labor, free markets, and the invisible hand. He is the patron saint of capitalism, though his earlier Theory of Moral Sentiments shows a more complex, sympathetic view of human nature. He was close friends with David Hume.
