Akwaeke Emezi is a Nigerian author and artist whose debut novel Freshwater draws on Igbo spiritual tradition to tell the story of a protagonist inhabited by spirits. Their fantasy novel Pet depicts a future society in which monsters have been banished, told through the story of a girl who summons one. Their work is among the most original in contemporary speculative fiction.
