Alexis de Tocqueville
French political thinker whose Democracy in America is the most penetrating analysis of American democracy ever written. He identified both the strengths and the dangers of democratic equality, especially the 'tyranny of the majority' and democratic despotism. His Old Regime and the Revolution analyzes the continuities between the ancien régime and the Revolution.
