Booker T. Washington

The most influential Black American leader of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Washington founded the Tuskegee Institute and advocated for Black economic self-improvement within a framework of accommodation to white supremacy. His autobiography Up from Slavery is a classic of American literature. His approach was challenged by Du Bois.
