C.S. Forester created Horatio Hornblower, one of the most beloved heroes in adventure fiction, in a series of naval novels set during the Napoleonic Wars. His meticulous historical research and his psychological insight into the lonely burden of command made the series a literary as well as popular success. He also wrote The African Queen, filmed by John Huston.
