Charles Lamb
English essayist whose Essays of Elia are among the most distinctive and beloved prose pieces in the English language. Writing under the persona of Elia, Lamb combined whimsy, melancholy, and personal confession in a style entirely his own. He cared for his sister Mary after she stabbed their mother.
