Cornell Woolrich was the master of noir suspense, writing tales of helpless protagonists trapped in nightmarish situations with an immediacy and emotional intensity unmatched in pulp fiction. He wrote prolifically for the pulps under several pen names and his stories were adapted into classic Hitchcock films. His work defined the psychological terror at the heart of American noir.
