Donald Hamilton was an American thriller writer whose Matt Helm spy series featured a government assassin operating in a morally unconstrained world quite different from the glamorous Bond universe. His novels were more cynical and procedurally realistic than most spy fiction of the period. The series was adapted into four films starring Dean Martin.
