Emmanuel Levinas
Lithuanian-French philosopher whose encounter with the Other as the ground of ethics challenged Western philosophy's primacy of ontology. Totality and Infinity and Otherwise than Being are his major works. His ethics of responsibility toward the Other has influenced theology, social work, and postcolonial theory.
