About the author

Epictetus of Hierapolis

A freed slave who became one of the great Stoic teachers of antiquity, Epictetus taught that freedom consists in controlling one's inner responses rather than external circumstances. His Discourses, recorded by Arrian, and the Enchiridion have been read continuously for nearly two millennia. He influenced Marcus Aurelius and the founders of cognitive behavioral therapy.
