Eric Ambler was the father of the modern realistic spy thriller, transforming the genre from boyish adventure into a morally serious examination of ideological conflict. His pre-war masterpieces like A Coffin for Dimitrios placed ordinary protagonists in nightmarish political webs. He influenced virtually every subsequent spy writer including le Carré and Greene.
