Spain's greatest 20th-century playwright and poet, Lorca combined Andalusian folk culture, surrealism, and intense lyricism to create works of haunting beauty. His rural tragedies explore passion, repression, and fate with operatic intensity. He was murdered by Francoist forces at 38.
