German playwright whose Spring Awakening and the Lulu plays scandalized the Kaiser's Germany with their depictions of adolescent sexuality and female desire. His grotesque, cabaret-inflected style directly influenced Brecht and expressionism. Spring Awakening became a Broadway musical a century after it was written.
