Frederick Douglass
America's most important African American intellectual and activist, Douglass escaped slavery to become the foremost voice of the abolitionist movement. His Narrative is the most powerful slave autobiography in the language. He was an advisor to Lincoln and a powerful advocate for women's suffrage as well.
