Gerhart Hauptmann
German Nobel laureate who brought naturalism to the German stage with plays depicting the suffering of the working class and peasantry. The Weavers is the greatest German naturalist play, depicting the Silesian weavers' uprising of 1844. His later work turned toward symbolism and classical myth.
