Glendon Swarthout was an American novelist whose Westerns and adventure novels were distinguished by their literary quality and moral seriousness. The Shootist, about an aging gunfighter dying of cancer, was filmed as John Wayne's last movie. He received the Spur Award from Western Writers of America.
