Gunnar Staalesen is a Norwegian crime writer who created Varg Veum, a Bergen private detective who is one of the earliest and most important protagonists in Nordic noir. His novels draw on the American hard-boiled tradition and are noted for their melancholy portrait of Norwegian society. He has been writing the Veum series since 1977.
