Hans-Georg Gadamer
Hans-Georg Gadamer

Gadamer's Truth and Method is the most important work in philosophical hermeneutics, arguing that all understanding involves a fusion of historical horizons rather than objective reconstruction of the author's intention. His long dialogue with Derrida was one of the defining philosophical exchanges of the late 20th century.
