Harold Pinter
Nobel Prize-winning English playwright whose work defined a new theatrical style—menacing pauses, everyday language concealing violence, power played out through the control of speech. The word 'Pinteresque' entered the language to describe his distinctive dramatic world. He was also an outspoken political activist.
