Henning Mankell was the foremost Swedish crime writer, whose Kurt Wallander series almost single-handedly created the international phenomenon of Scandinavian crime fiction known as Scandi noir. His novels addressed Sweden's social failures with angry directness, using Wallander's depression and disillusionment as a lens on a changing society. He is one of Europe's most widely translated writers.
