About the author

Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim

The first known female playwright in the Western tradition, Hrotsvitha was a German canoness who wrote six Latin comedies modeled on Terence but with Christian themes. Her plays celebrate virginity, martyrdom, and conversion with dramatic flair. She remained largely unknown until her manuscripts were rediscovered in 1494.
