John Buchan was a Scottish author whose Richard Hannay thrillers, beginning with The Thirty-Nine Steps, defined the chase-thriller or ripping yarn subgenre. His influence on spy fiction was acknowledged by Graham Greene and Alfred Hitchcock, who adapted The Thirty-Nine Steps into a classic film. He was also Governor-General of Canada as Lord Tweedsmuir.
