John Cheever was the supreme chronicler of suburban American life in the mid-twentieth century, probing beneath its placid surface to reveal anxiety, alcoholism, and transcendent longing. Called the Chekhov of the suburbs, he won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.
