John Stuart Mill
The most important liberal philosopher of the Victorian era, Mill defended individual liberty against social conformity and state tyranny. The Subjection of Women is his feminist masterpiece; On Liberty is the defining text of classical liberalism. Utilitarianism refined Bentham's doctrine with qualitative distinctions.
