The prodigiously prolific founder of Spanish Golden Age theater, Lope de Vega claimed to have written over 1,500 plays, of which some 400 survive. He developed the comedia nueva form blending comedy, tragedy, and honor themes. His energy and invention made him the dominant force in Spanish drama for generations.
