James was a medieval scholar whose ghost stories are among the finest in English literature, notable for their learned settings, precise evocation of dread, and refusal to explain the supernatural. He virtually invented the antiquarian ghost story and his technique of leaving evil incompletely revealed influenced horror fiction for generations.
