Maaza Mengiste
Ethiopian-American novelist whose The Shadow King, a historical novel about Ethiopian women soldiers resisting Mussolini's invasion, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Her work is lyrical and politically engaged. She is an important voice in African-American literary fiction.
