Austrian-Jewish philosopher whose I and Thou distinguished two fundamental modes of existence: the I-Thou relation of genuine encounter and the I-It relation of use and manipulation. His philosophy of dialogue influenced theology, education, and psychotherapy. He was also a major interpreter of Hasidic tradition.
