German philosopher whose Being and Time is the most important work of 20th-century continental philosophy. His analysis of Dasein, authenticity, and the forgetting of Being inaugurated existentialism and influenced hermeneutics, poststructuralism, and environmental philosophy. His membership in the Nazi party remains deeply controversial.
