The founding figure of modern feminism, Wollstonecraft wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman in response to the exclusion of women from the Enlightenment's promise of reason and liberty. She argued that women are rational beings entitled to the same education and rights as men. She was the mother of Mary Shelley.
