Chinese Confucian philosopher who developed and defended Confucius's teachings, arguing that human nature is fundamentally good. His dialogues with rulers on benevolent government and the people's right to overthrow a tyrant make him a forerunner of democratic political theory. He is called the Second Sage of Confucianism.
