Mervyn Peake was a British author and artist whose Gormenghast trilogy is one of the most distinctive and celebrated works of Gothic fantasy ever written. The labyrinthine castle of Gormenghast and its rigidly ritualized inhabitants have no parallel in the genre. His intensely visual imagination shaped both the prose and the illustrations that accompanied it.
