Natsume Soseki was a Japanese author considered the greatest novelist of the Meiji era. His novel Kusamakura contains elements of dreamlike fantasy and his story Ten Nights of Dreams is a celebrated work of proto-surrealist fantasy. While not primarily a genre author, his influence on Japanese speculative fiction is profound.
