Paul Kalanithi was a neurosurgeon at Stanford who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer at 36 and wrote a memoir that became a national bestseller about confronting mortality from both sides of the doctor-patient relationship. Though primarily a memoir, it deeply influenced medical practice and end-of-life conversations.
