Rachel Carson
American marine biologist whose Silent Spring launched the modern environmental movement by documenting the devastating effects of pesticides on ecosystems. She died of cancer two years after publication, but her work led to the banning of DDT and the founding of the EPA. The Sea Around Us won the National Book Award.
