American philosopher whose Anarchy, State, and Utopia offered the most rigorous libertarian critique of Rawls's egalitarian liberalism. His thought experiment about the 'experience machine' is one of the most discussed in modern philosophy. He later moderated his libertarianism in The Examined Life.
