Romain Gary was a French novelist who remains the only author to win the Prix Goncourt twice, achieving the second win pseudonymously as Émile Ajar. Born in Lithuania, he served as a fighter pilot in World War II and drew on his extraordinary life experiences to produce some of the most celebrated French novels of the 20th century.
