Roman biographer whose The Twelve Caesars is the most gossipy and readable account of the early emperors, full of anecdote, scandal, and character detail. His organizational principle—presenting each emperor's virtues then vices—became a model for biography. He worked as a secretary to the Emperor Hadrian.
