Malaysian novelist whose The Garden of Evening Mists won the Man Asian Literary Prize and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. His lyrical fiction explores Malaysia's Japanese occupation and its aftermath. He is one of the most celebrated Malaysian writers in English.
