About the author

Terence Publius Terentius Afer

A freed slave who became Rome's most refined comic playwright, Terence brought psychological subtlety and elegant Latin to the stage. Unlike Plautus, he favored complex character studies over broad farce. His six surviving plays were studied throughout medieval Europe.
