British-American historian whose Postwar is the finest history of Europe since 1945. His essays collected in Reappraisals and When the Facts Change are models of engaged historical thinking. Ill Fares the Land, written while dying of ALS, is a passionate defense of social democracy. He was one of the great public intellectuals of his generation.
