American playwright whose Angels in America is the most celebrated American play of the late 20th century, combining AIDS, Mormonism, Roy Cohn, and prophecy in an epic theatrical vision. He won the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Awards for both parts of the work. His drama is explicitly political and deeply humanist.
