Cambodian-American novelist whose In the Shadow of the Banyan is a lyrical novel of survival during the Khmer Rouge, drawn from her own childhood. Her fiction gives voice to the silenced victims of one of the twentieth century's great atrocities. She is an important voice in Southeast Asian-American literature.
