Vernor Vinge was an American mathematician and science fiction author who coined the term technological singularity as used in futurist discourse. A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky both won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. His vision of the zones of thought in the galaxy offered a radical new framework for hard science fiction cosmology.
