William McIlvanney was a Scottish literary novelist who essentially invented tartan noir with his Jack Laidlaw detective series, predating Ian Rankin by a decade. His novels were praised for their literary quality and their sharp social observation of working-class Glasgow. He is considered the godfather of Scottish crime fiction and was awarded the Crime Writers' Association Diamond Dagger.
