Chinese-British novelist and filmmaker whose UFO in Her Eyes and A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers explore the Chinese experience of modernity and of the West. Her memoir Once Upon a Time in the East won the National Book Critics Circle Award. She is one of the most distinctive international voices in British fiction.
