Xiran Jay Zhao is a Chinese-Canadian author whose Iron Widow is a dark YA fantasy drawing on Chinese mythology and the legend of Empress Wu. The novel was inspired by Pacific Rim and features mecha-piloting protagonists in a feminist rewrite of Chinese history. Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor is their middle-grade debut.
