Riders of the Purple Sage

Zane Grey was the first major Western novelist, whose Riders of the Purple Sage essentially created the modern Western genre. His vivid descriptions of the Arizona and Utah landscapes combined with romantic adventure plots made him the most popular American author of the early 20th century. He sold over 40 million copies and his work inspired generations of Western films.
