Alexander McCall Smith is a Scottish-born Botswanan legal academic and writer whose No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series became an international phenomenon. His gentle, optimistic crime novels set in Botswana introduced African settings and characters to mainstream crime fiction in an enormously popular and culturally significant way.
