The most important liberal philosopher of the 19th century, Mill refined utilitarianism, defended freedom of thought and expression, and wrote The Subjection of Women, an early feminist masterwork. On Liberty is the defining text of classical liberalism. He was educated from infancy by his father James Mill in a famous experiment.
